How do I make my invitation open like an envelope?
Turn on the Opening in Manage → Features, or at the top of Design → Look. Guests meet your invitation sealed (a lined envelope, a pocketfold, a postcard, a scroll and more) and press the seal to open it.
Open Manage → Features and press Turn on on the Opening card. The Opening card is also the first thing in Design → Look, with its switch beside it. Its name, like every other way to the Opening, opens the Opening's own page in the Design room: its switch, the nine openings large enough to watch, and the choices below them. Back returns to wherever you came from. In an app version before 1.6 these open a sheet with the same choices instead. A guest who follows your link then meets a sealed envelope carrying the party's name, and presses it to open the invitation.
How it opens comes first on the page. There are nine:
- Letter: the flap lifts onto the envelope's liner, and a letter folded in thirds rises out and unfolds into your invitation.
- Tear strip: a perforated strip tears across and the envelope comes apart.
- Pocketfold: a cover lifts and the card rises out of its pocket.
- Postcard: the stamp is postmarked and the card turns over.
- String and button: the string unwinds from the button, and the flap lifts.
- Vellum: a translucent sheet over your invitation peels away from its corner.
- Scroll: a sealed scroll unrolls onto your invitation.
- Front door: a knock at a mahogany front door; it swings in, and your invitation is waiting inside.
- Treasure map: a folded map opens out, a trail leads to an X on your venue, and the X opens onto your invitation.
In the app, the nine need version 1.5 or later. Each is a card with a small copy of it. When you arrive on the page, each plays once, in turn, until you pick one or, on a computer, point at one; a card also plays when you pick it, and on a computer when you point at it. To see the one you picked over your real invitation, press Preview beside its switch (below).
Below it are only the choices the opening you picked has:
- Paper is its finish: Plain, Linen, Fresco, Coated, Pearl or Glitter.
- Color is the paper's color. All but Ivory and Kraft come from your invitation's own colors, so they always go with it.
- Liner is the pattern inside the envelope or folder, in your invitation's colors: Plain, Stripes or Scallops.
- Out at sea, for the treasure map, is the line written on its sea. Leave it empty for "here be dragons".
- On the knocker, for the front door, is engraved on the brass plate above its knocker: up to three characters, starting as the first letter of the party's name.
- On the seal is what is pressed into the seal: up to three characters, such as initials. It starts as the first letter of the party's name, and goes back to that letter if you clear it.
- The seal is how it looks: Flat, Wax, Embossed or Stamp; and The seal's color is your invitation's Accent, Highlight or Ink, or Sealing red. An embossed seal has no color of its own. String and button always has a flat seal, so it does not offer The seal; your choice comes back if you pick another opening.
A new Opening starts as a lined Letter on Pearl paper in your invitation's own paper color. An invitation that already opened in one of the earlier ways (Part, Flap, Doors, Iris or Lift) keeps it until you pick another; Part is now a Letter.
A guest sees it once on each device, and never after they have answered. It stops appearing once the party starts. Someone whose device is set to reduce motion still presses the seal, and it fades away without moving.
To see it yourself, press Preview beside the switch at the top of the page. Your invitation opens full screen with the envelope you chose over it, before you turn it on as well as after. Nothing you press in a preview is saved, and Close preview returns to the page. In an app version before 1.6 the sheet's Preview, at its foot, does the same. Once it is on, Opening above the preview plays it again.
On the website, the first new event you make greets you once: its preview opens sealed in a pocketfold until you press the seal. It does not happen again on another event, or at all once you have turned the Opening on.
Confetti on a yes
When a guest answers yes, confetti in your invitation's colors falls over their confirmation. It needs no feature turned on. It plays for a first yes and for an answer changed to a yes, not for a maybe or a no, and not on a device set to reduce motion.
